Susie's Attempt at Poetry

Okay, this is in honor of my good friend Seajay, who is a true poet in so many ways.  She has inspired me to blog poetry as we travel.  Now, in order to appreciate the rhythm of my poem, I need you to start bobbing your head and making rapping noises with your mouth like an SNL skit... here goes:

(I think my "style" comes from my grandparents' legendary Wickett holiday card poems...)

So around da world we gonna go...
PlanetHoppers da blog you ought to know
Les, Susie, and Noa is da family of three
It's 2011, an' we're gonna be FREE
It's a Big Bold move to break da chains
We'll be back later to join in da games
Fly United to Kona, kick back for awhile
SUP, Surf, Snorkel, true Hawaiian style.
Hale Iki is da best little house by the sea
But a hundred little ants came marching afta me!
Rena & Egon always island Ohana
Les sprained his ankle; he really didn't wanna!
Kahalu'u is where to find Noa's shave ice
All the puffers and honu's swim close, so nice.
Say "Aloha & Mahalo" and head to Honolulu
Luggage lady at the airport goes ballistic, kinda kuku!
Flew Continental...just like its name,
Landed in Lima, feelin' lazy and lame.
Caught another flight goin' to Machu Picchu
High in the Andes, where the altitude will beat you!
Hotel Andina says "Drink some Coca Tea!"
Hiking on da ruins, Susie cartwheels "Whoopee!"
Our guide tells the history, so we listen rather closely
Noa gets hungry, thinkin' bout food always mostly.
Wakin' up in the dark, we race to da train
Climb aboard the "Inca Rail" so comfy; can't complain.
Ecuador is next on the bucket list
Traffic in Quito, shake a feisty fist
Go to da Amazon for life in the jungle
Arrive at Arasha…a Club Med bungle!
Mini golf and swimming pools; activities galore,
Torch hike and chocolate beans; less might’ve been more.
Hoping for a monkey, we sip a Pina Colada,
Beautiful flowers all around, but wildlife nada.
Easter Sunday drive soon becomes 8 hours
Rainy sprint to the Equator, feel the polar powers
Early morning flight on TACA airline
Goin’ to Galapagos for a cruise so fine.
Meet Sam our guide and Millennium our ship
Otto is the Captain, this catamaran is hip!
16 passengers, we all become friends
With Norm 1 & Norm 2, the laughter never ends
Blue-footed Boobies, and black & red Frigates
Penguins & Iguanas, we really do dig it!
Sea Wolves so friendly, greet us on da beach,
Stingrays, eels & sharks, all within reach.
The food is so fabulous, we eat like no tomorrow
When da cruise ends, it is with great sorrow.
Not to worry, don’t be sad, cuz now it’s time to surf
In San Bartolo, with Antonio, on his local turf.
Les grabs a longboard, Susie does too
But Noa gets a shorty and shreds on something new
Hotel Surf Penescal ranks number one
Hospitality and location make it super fun
Took TAM Airlines to Sao Paulo, Brazil
Visa’s too expensive, so in da airport we chill
23 hours to shop duty-free
Found a place to sleep, hang out…just Be.
Couple more flights to get going far
Then land on the Isle of Madagascar!
Customs take awhile; this is no Amazing Race
Find our driver, Franckie, a big happy face.
Fruit stands & meat markets buzzing with flies
Mud huts with lots of children, all before our eyes.
Fields of rice and corn, over every hill
Clear cut the forests, the locals will
Charcoal smokestacks and truck exhaust fumes
We hope the future is not already dooms
Go on a trek, deep in the rain forest
Searching for lemurs, put our eyes to the test
Donya can find anything, large or small
Chameleons, frogs & stick bugs, way up tall
Les gets a lemur to land on his head
Noa has lemurs tickle him red.
Hotel Feony’la is a simple little hut
That big Mosquito net will protect our butt.
Off to South Africa to see the Cape of Good Hope
Can’t stop travelin’ now, no way, nope!
The offshore winds blow a mighty gale
We sleep in Camps Bay without fail.
Noa wants to swim in a cage, near a shark,
Have you seen da Great Whites? It’s no lark!
Cape Town drive to meet Joe Wade
This is the life, he’s got it made!
Off to Jo-Burg town, just a quick little flight
To hang at Laine’s Marloth pad for a few night.
Can you say Kruger National Park?
This place is amazing, especially near dark.
Zebras ate an apple right from my hand,
While warthogs and impalas skitter overland
Little duiker “Tidbit” wanders up to say Hi
Noa makes a friend,  by and by.
30+ Elephants splashing just over yonder
Think perhaps here is where we will wander!
11 hour flight takes us to Europe now,
Top of the Eiffel Tower makes us all say “Wow!”
Paris is incredible,
It’s all so edible!

...and that's as far as I got so far. More to come on the next long airplane flight! Ha!
